Down and Dirty is the name of a Bboy (breakdance) competition created by NAKA B-BOY EDITON, where Trendsplant was an official partner. For those of you who have never been to a BBoy event (it was my first), I must say that it is a truly amazing experience. As long as the show goes on all you feel like doing is DANCING!

After the event we decided to sit down and write a review, but we soon realized that BBoying and Down and Dirty could not be explained better than by veteran BBoy Wicket himself. Wicket explained what was so special about Down and Dirty and what holds in store for the future generation of Bboys and Bgirls.

Down and Dirty es el nombre de una competición de Bboy (breakdance) creada por NAKA B-BOY EDITION, en la que Trendsplant es partner oficial. Para aquellos que nunca han asistido a un evento BBoy (fué mi primero) debo decir que es una gran experiencia. Mientras dura la competición todo lo que sientes son ganas de bailar.

Cuando acabó el evento decidimos sentarnos y escribir una reseña, pero pronto nos dimos cuenta de que el BBoying y Down and Dirty no podían explicarse mejor que de manos del propio Wicket, un BBoy veterano y reconocido. Wicket nos explicó que es lo especial de Down and Dirty y que propone para la futura generación de Bboys y BGirls.

“To start off, the concept is quite different than other events. Down and Dirty’s rules are “no routines and no commandos”, which means each team of two members are to compete by solos only. We specifically invited 8 teams (top 8 invites) from all over the west coast. The top 8 do not have to go through the pre-lims and automatically have access to the 1/8 Finals, as opposed to everyone else who signs up.

Our mission with Down and Dirty is to create a platform for established and up an coming bboys to showcase their craft and create long lasting careers. Down and Dirty will ultimately offer a National and International circuit for BBoys to make their way up in the ranks of the new age of PRO BBoying, and allow them to have ownership of their careers and lives in order to turn their passion into real long lasting jobs.

“Para comenzar, el concepto es bastante diferente a otros eventos. Las reglas de Down and Dirty son “no routines and no commandos” (ni rutinas, ni comandos) lo que quiere decir que no hay nada de coreografía, cada equipo de dos miembros compite uno contra uno únicamente. Invitamos específicamente a 8 equipos ( top 8 ) de toda la costa Oeste de los Estados Unidos. Los top 8 no necesitaron pasar el showcase eliminatorio de la primera ronda como el resto del total de 30 equipos inscritos, y pasan directamente a la ronda de 1/8 de Final.

Nuestra misión con Down and Dirty es crear una plataforma para BBoys establecidos y promesas para mostrar sus habilidades y crear una carrera profesional duradera para ellos. Down and Dirty ofrecerá un circuito Nacional e Internacional para que los BBoys consigan subir en el ranking de la nueva era del BBoying Profesional, y permitirles ser propietarios de sus carreras y vidas con el objetivo de convertir su pasión en un verdadero trabajo estable.

All of the competitors are down to support this event because all they have to do is battle by solos. No routines and no commandos. Just get Down and Dirty!

The music was provided by our guest djs Quantum of Headhunters from San Jose and Frankie Flave of Killafornia from Los Angeles. Hip Hop, Breakbeats, Funk and Soul music made the vibe raw and energetic at Down and Dirty.

There were ciphers (circles of dancers) going on at the same time the competition went on. Everybody was hype and wanted to throw down. I was surprised to see how many b-girls represented and they definitely made a point. Big shout out to the Rock Steady Crew (Bonita and Feenx) for making it all the way to the semi-finals. All of the battles were heated and especially the finals. Monsta Squad and Renegades squared off against each other, and Monsta Squad came out on top as winners taking home the $2000 cash prize!

Even though the event lasted about 6 hours, people left wanting more and so did I.

Semi-finals: Rock Steady Girls (Bonita+Feenx) vs. Renegades (Bobby+Naytron)

Todos los participantes estuvieron allí para apoyar este evento porque todo lo que tienen que hacer es batallas individuales. Sin rutinas ni comandos. Just get Down and Dirty!

La música estuvo a cargo de nuestros Djs invitados, DJ Quantum de Headhunters en San Jose (CA) y Frankie Flave de Killafornia en Los Angeles (CA). Hip Hop, Breakbeats, Funk y Soul crearon un ambiente energético durante Down and Dirty.

Hubo cyphers (círculos de baile) durante toda la competición. Todo el mundo estaba activo y estaban ansiosos por lanzarse al suelo. Me sorprendió ver cuantas B-Girls representaron se hicieron notar. Importante mencionar a la Rock Steady Crew, que con las BGirls Bonita y Feenx llegaron a las semifinales mostrando una gran energía. Todas las batallas fueron acaloradas, especialmente las finales. Monsta Squad y los Renegades fueron los que lucharon en la final por el título y al final los de Los Angeles se alzaron con la victoria en Down and Dirty y el cheque por valor de $2000!!

A pesar de que el evento duró aproximadamente 6 horas, la gente se marchó del local queriendo más igual que yo. Agradecimentos especiales a Mike de Trendsplant y Wyatt por su apoyo e impresionante trabajo para ayudarnos a llevar a cabo Down and Dirty. Definitivamente habrá más en el futuro.”
